Thriller films

The trailer for a thriller film shows a great deal of suspense even in the trailers. It creates suspense by the fast music being played like a race of time. The trailers quickly jump from scene to scene all holding a piece of information or action needed for the film. Diegetic sound- we see the sound being produced. Non-digetic sound- we can hear it but we don't know where its coming from its just in the background, so we cant see it.

Se7en title sequence-
Turns into techno music and is a heart beat to begin with.
The clips are put together in short bursts, in the old days- dark room for photography.

The sound in the title sequence dramatic music being played throughout to gain suspense. It also has the sounds of things that he is doing put into sort of a repetitive tune with what sounds like the odd thing made out to sound like a scream. it is edited to look dark and mysterious with flickers from clips to make it look mysterious and gain suspision. There are many thing to relate to god within this sequence and sin is a big thing.

Taxi driver-
People's perspective of him is jazz music showing he's relaxed and calm. Scarier music came from his perspective

Casino Royale -
It starts off with he actor and a gun shot with blood covering the screen
Has the theme of a casino by the card patterns
Shows him holding a gun a lot
Action scene of fighting
Mixes the theme of casino with violence and guns
Shows murders
Mysterious man in each frame
Shows James bonds agent thing
Shows him right at the end In the suit then goes back to a black cartoon
Very colourful and music is quite upbeat and mysterious
The bad guys and in red and he's shown as a hero
The blood is used to create patterns throughout
Gun shots into a card to create 007 mixing James Bond with the casino
Shows the films based around a casino and more will happen in the casino than meant to
Reveals a face in the queens head to show the main woman's face
The beginning is the traditional bond film

Falling down opening-

What does the sound tell us about this character?
Sets a scene  for the surroundings showing the noisiness and traffic

How do we know this is a thriller?
Because the music sounds dramatic and suspense and shows the film is bases around a man who is quite uncomfortable and very stressed maybe under pressure. It shows the film is about waiting as he is stuck in traffic and maybe him having a bad day.

What is the role of the opening if the film?
To set the scene for the whole film
To introduce the film
To show the main characters

Saul Bass

Saul Bass- Saul Bass is an American graphic designer, he created design titles for thriller films. He is important to what we are doing as he has done the same thing as what we are going to do. We can watch his past work for inspiration and ideas as he is doing the same genre as us. We can see what he has done that we like and use it and change it to put in our title sequence. He is also important as he has done thriller film title sequences we can see what the title sequences need to include.

The Hunger Games Review

Thriller reviews

The Hunger Games

Hunger games is a futuristic film with 12 districts. Two representatives are chosen at a random lottery to compete in the hunger games, the television games. There are 24 competitors in the games and 16 year old Katniss volunteers to take her sisters place against stronger better contestants. The games are a fight to the death and Katniss and Peeta undergo intense training before battling  in the hunger games. The point of the games is to kill each other and be the last surviving person in the wilderness. Katniss has the useful talents of being a great hunter and archer and has no choice but to compete for her life in the brutal game.

The hunger games is a good thriller. This is because it always has that element of surprise and what next for the audience. It has dramatic music at dramatic moments to create more suspense and thrill and is overall very suspense throughout. The film constantly makes the audience think if the main characters which are shown to be good survive till the end with a flow of action packed things happening to doubt it. Throughout the film each scene shows and tells something new to the audience and is a fast pace film which makes you sit on the edge of your seat. There is not much dialogue in hunger games and that adds by the suspense as it is the element of surprise. It also makes a good thriller as it is a race against time which most thrillers are with the viewers doing the countdown thought to see if she is the winner and the main thing, survives.

Woman in black review

Thriller reviews

Woman in black-

Woman in black’s main character Arthur- Daniel Radcliffe is a lawyer and told to travel to a village to have a look at some documentation. He is told to return to London but chooses to ignore it. He finds out the Eel Marsh House is haunted by a woman dressed in black and learns the woman lost her son drowned in the marsh and takes revenge by taking the children of the scared locals. Arthur tries to put a stop to this.

There is a huge element of suspense throughout this film as the audience are wondering when and where the woman in black will show up again and what child will be taken next. The film is set in the olden times with weary and dull settings throughout. There is dramatic music to raise suspension on the scary parts when she does show up and little hints throughout to show she is there. Woman in black is a good thriller as there is thrill throughout the film and is a fast pace film with something exciting happening in each scene. It also makes a good thriller as it is a race against time when he discovers what the woman in blacks true intent is which creates a great deal of suspense of if Arthur will make it in time. The film is full of surprises and twists and makes the audience think, it uses the lighting to create shadowing throughout and even starts with an action scene to automatically bring that element of thrill to the film

Taken Review

Thriller reviews

Taken Review

In taken the dad works in the C.I.A and lets his 17-year-old daughter travel around Europe following a band she likes with her friend. When they get to Paris they meet a man called Peter that tricks them into seeing where they are staying. An Albanian gang of human traffickers kidnap the girls and the dad, Bryan, sets out on a mission to find them with the many skills he has gained from his last job. He travels to Paris and finds out all he can about the people that took he’s daughter from the recorded phone call from his daughter and puts together all the pieces killing people in his path to eventually find the daughters friend dead and then his daughter alive.

Taken is a film with a great deal of suspension throughout as the audience are thinking will he ever find his daughter in the small time period that he has before there is no chance. Things that they use to create the suspension through out the film are the dramatic music on the parts that are action packed. Taken makes a good thriller because it starts with an action scene on the dad doing his job saving a singer from being killed, this automatically gives that element of thrill. The main character is also very mysterious and in a way miserable until the end when he gets his daughter back. It also makes a good thriller because the story line as a whole teaches the audience something and that is don’t trust stranger when you are away on holiday.

The film as a whole is very action packed and every roughly 15 minutes the dad is confronted with the next bad guys that he has to either find out information from or kill. The pace of the film is very high with each scene telling the audience something new, as the dad has no time to waste its all very suspense.
